The Tokyo International Film Festival is set to kick off with the world premiere of 11 Rebels, directed by Kazuya Shiraishi from Japan. This period action film, based on a script by the late Kasahara Kazuo, revolves around an 11-member suicide squad embarking on a fortress-defence mission amidst a fierce war in Japanese history. Scheduled for a Japanese release on November 1, the Toei production has already captured the attention of audiences worldwide, securing distribution in North America and Germany. The festival will come to a close with the French-Italian comedy Marcello Mio, helmed by Christophe Honoré, starring Chiara Mastroianni as she transforms into her real-life father, Marcello Mastroianni.
The star-studded jury panel for this year’s festival includes French actress Chiara Mastroianni, Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To, Hungarian filmmaker Enyedi Ildikó, and Japanese actress Ai Hashimoto. Chiara Mastroianni’s dual role as a jury member and lead actress in Marcello Mio adds an intriguing dimension to the festival lineup. Tokyo festival programming director Shozo Ichiyama praised the film for its unique blend of homage to Marcello Mastroianni and experimental storytelling, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. In addition to the main lineup, the festival has introduced a Women’s Empowerment section, dedicated to showcasing works by female filmmakers with a focus on female narratives.
Commenting on 11 Rebels, Ichiyama highlighted the film’s tribute to Toei’s tradition of ensemble period dramas, emphasizing its high production values and attention to detail in action sequences and set design.
