Director Lee Isaac Chung made a bold decision in the Twisters sequel by choosing not to include a kiss scene between the two main characters, Kate Cooper and Tyler Owens. Despite filming the scene, Chung opted for an alternative ending that he believed would resonate more with modern audiences.
Chung explained that he felt audiences today are different from those in the ’90s, who may have expected a romantic climax in a film like Twisters. By omitting the kiss scene, Chung wanted to challenge the conventional romantic comedy tropes and offer a more contemporary resolution to the story.
While actor Glen Powell joked about taking offense to the scene being cut, Chung emphasized that the decision was not a reflection of the actors’ performances. In fact, he believed that ending the film with the characters chasing another storm allowed Kate to maintain her agency and purpose, rather than reducing her journey to a simple romantic conclusion.
Actress Daisy Edgar-Jones also appreciated the decision to forgo the kiss scene, noting that it allowed the characters to be seen as equals in terms of their passion for storm-chasing and understanding of weather. This choice added depth to the characters and highlighted their shared interests and intelligence.
