The Ambitious Civil War Epic: Horizon An American Saga Review

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, the latest project from Kevin Costner, is set to start streaming exclusively on Max on Friday, August 23. Despite its Cannes premiere and June 28 theatrical debut, where it only grossed $34 million, the film has faced some setbacks. Originally, Warner Bros planned to release Chapter 2 just two months after on August 16, but the sequel’s release has been postponed indefinitely. This delay is to allow viewers who have not yet watched Chapter 1 the opportunity to catch up. Chapter 2 will be shown out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, September 7, with Chapter 1 being screened earlier in the day.

In the spirit of classic Westerns from Warner Bros, Horizon: An American Saga delves into the allure of the Old West and the struggles faced during its conquest and eventual loss. Set during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s film takes audiences on a journey through a nation torn apart by conflict. The story unfolds through the eyes of families, friends, and enemies as they grapple with the complexities of what it truly means to be part of the United States.

Costner’s vision for Horizon extends beyond just Chapter 1 and 2. He envisions the project as a four-part series, with Chapter 3 already in production. Alongside co-writing and directing, Costner is part of a talented ensemble cast that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, and many more. The script for Horizon was written by Costner and Jon Baird, with a story conceived by Mark Kasdan. Costner also serves as a producer alongside Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard.

Horizon: An American Saga presents a grand and ambitious storytelling of the Civil War era through the lens of individuals on both sides of the conflict. Despite its initial commercial misfire, the film promises to captivate audiences with its intricate narrative and stellar performances from a talented ensemble cast. It will be interesting to see how the delayed release of Chapter 2 affects the overall reception of the series.
