Summer Box Office Predictions and New Movie Releases

This summer, Disney is expected to once again take the top spot at the box office, marking their ninth time achieving this feat. With their latest release, 20th Century Studios’ Alien: Romulus, projected to outperform Deadpool & Wolverine in its fifth weekend, the competition is fierce. Alien: Romulus has already accumulated $50.6M in box office revenue, showcasing its appeal to audiences.

It Ends with Us, a romantic drama from Sony/Wayfarer Studios, is on track to become Blake Lively’s highest-grossing movie domestically, surpassing Green Lantern’s earnings of $116.6M. Directed by and starring Justin Baldoni, this emotional film is expected to bring in around $13M at the box office. Lively’s performance and the compelling storyline have resonated with viewers, propelling the film towards success.

Despite the strong holdovers at the box office, three new studio wide entries are set to debut this weekend. While these films are projected to have modest openings in the single-digit millions, they provide fresh content for moviegoers to enjoy. The competition among new releases adds an element of unpredictability to the summer box office landscape.

As late August rolls around, the box office faces challenges with the transition to back-to-school season. With a significant portion of K-12 students and college students returning to their studies, the moviegoing audience may shrink. However, the allure of captivating new releases and established franchises continues to draw viewers to theaters, keeping the summer box office interesting.

Amazon MGM Studios is set to release Blink Twice, a thriller directed by Zoe Kravitz and starring Channing Tatum. The film follows the story of tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum) who invites waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) to his private island, only for her to uncover unsettling truths. Despite its star-studded cast and intriguing premise, Blink Twice is not expected to reach blockbuster opening numbers. Critics have praised the film, giving it a solid rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lionsgate is bringing back The Crow, with Bill Skarsgård taking on the lead role. While the original 1994 film opened to strong numbers, the reboot is projected to have a more modest opening between $6M-$9M. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the film follows the story of soulmates seeking vengeance in the afterlife. Additionally, Sony is releasing the faith-based film The Forge, directed by Alex Kendrick, which follows a young man named Isaiah navigating life after high school.

The summer box office is heating up with new releases and anticipated performances from established franchises. Disney’s continued success, coupled with the introduction of fresh content, promises an exciting season for movie enthusiasts. As audiences flock to theaters to experience the latest releases, the box office landscape remains dynamic and ever-changing.
