Recognizing Silver Lake’s Historic Connection to Laurel and Hardy’s “The Music Box”

An intersection in Silver Lake has recently been designated as historic due to its connection with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy’s classic 1932 film, “The Music Box.” The City Council made the unanimous decision to name the intersection of Vendome Street and Del Monte Drive as the “1932 site of the ‘The Music Box’ Starring Laurel and Hardy.” This recognition comes as Laurel and Hardy won an Academy Award for short comedy for their work in the film, which was famously filmed on the Music Box Steps in Silver Lake.

The premise of “The Music Box” is a simple yet hilarious one: the comedic duo must deliver a large piano to a house at the top of the steps. The film is known for its surprise ending and has become a beloved classic among fans. The Music Box Steps have become a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to see the iconic filming location.

Councilman Hugo Soto-Martínez expressed the importance of recognizing Silver Lake’s historic outdoor staircases, which contribute to the rich cultural fabric of the community. He stated, “Silver Lake is home to so many historic outdoor staircases, contributing to the rich cultural fabric of our community. We are proud to recognize this small but mighty landmark in the history of our city’s most important industry.” The Music Box Steps already feature a plaque erected by the Hollywood Heritage Museum, The Society of Operating Cameramen, and The Silver Lake Improvement Association.

In celebration of the historic significance of the Music Box Steps, the Silver Lake Improvement Association will host its annual “Music Box Steps Day Festival” at Laurel and Hardy Park, located across the street from the iconic filming location. This festival serves as a tribute to the enduring legacy of Laurel and Hardy’s work and the impact they have had on Hollywood’s golden age.
