Pier Paolo Piccioli recently concluded his impressive tenure as creative director at Valentino, marking the end of his decades-long career with the iconic fashion house. Before parting ways, Piccioli delved back into the world of film production to collaborate with Italian filmmaker Riccardo Vannuccini on the costumes for “Things And Other Things.” The indie UK-Italian co-production stars the talented Greta Bellamacina, with Piccioli designing bespoke costumes for her character, including a striking blue dress with a 6-metre long train specifically made for the film.
Paolo Piccioli’s journey with Valentino began in 1999 when he joined forces with Maria Grazia Chiuri, his longtime collaborator. Over the years, the duo elevated the brand’s aesthetic and influence, eventually becoming co-creative directors in 2008. Following Chiuri’s departure for Dior in 2016, Piccioli assumed the role of sole creative director, steering Valentino into new and innovative directions. The collaboration between Piccioli and Vannuccini signifies a meeting of creative minds from different realms of artistry, blending fashion and film seamlessly.
“Things And Other Things” isn’t Piccioli’s first venture into the world of cinema. In 2019, he collaborated with acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino on the short film “The Staggering Girl,” starring Julianne Moore, Kyle MacLachlan, and Mia Goth. The film premiered at the renowned Cannes Film Festival, showcasing Piccioli’s couture creations in a visually stunning narrative. With “Things And Other Things,” Piccioli extends his creative reach, once again merging the realms of high fashion and cinematic storytelling.
“Things And Other Things” follows the characters of Irene (Bellamacina) and Rocco (Vannuccini) from their previous collaboration in “Commedia.” This time, the duo navigates a haunting post-industrial landscape in Tuscany, portraying a sense of freedom and exploration in abandoned buildings, a deserted theme park, and other evocative locations. The film’s narrative explores the concept of impossibility and the liberation of time, as the characters engage in everyday acts that leave lasting impressions on the world around them.
The cast of “Things And Other Things” is rounded out by a talented ensemble, including Maria Sandrelli, Alessandra Piscopo, Alba Bartolia, and Gabriele Guerra. Director of Photography, Manolo Cinti, captures the essence of the post-industrial landscape, infusing each frame with a sense of melancholic beauty. The original soundtrack by composer Pietro Freddi adds another layer of depth to the film, creating a multi-sensory experience for the audience.
