Exploring the Creative Mind of John Bird: From Journalism to Fiction

John Bird, the renowned founder of The Big Issue and a prominent figure in British journalism and charity work, is now venturing into the world of fiction with his debut novel. Titled “Do You Sincerely Want to Smash Capitalism and Have a Full Sex Life?”, this novel promises to be a unique blend of history, mythical beings, and philosophy, drawing inspiration from Bird’s own life experiences. The novel has been optioned by Genesius Pictures for a potential screen adaptation, adding another dimension to Bird’s already diverse career.

The novel follows the story of a group of interventionist Faeries led by their revenge-seeking queen, Spunkthought. These Faeries, especially one named Nippit-in-the-bud, intercept notable figures throughout history on January 30th, which also happens to be Bird’s birthday. Despite their efforts, they are unable to prevent the kidnapping of “Old Bird,” who is then compelled to narrate his life story to an assistant named Grimtale. This intricate narrative woven by Bird promises to offer readers a glimpse into his profound reflections on life and history.

Genesius Pictures, the production outfit behind the BAFTA-nominee “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” is currently developing the screen adaptation of Bird’s novel. Known for their innovative storytelling, Genesius Pictures is set to bring Bird’s fantastical world to life on either the small screen or the big screen. With a lineup of successful projects under their belt, including the upcoming Pierce Brosnan-starrer “Four Letters of Love” and the vampire thriller “The Radleys,” Genesius Pictures is poised to create a visually captivating adaptation of Bird’s work.

John Bird, a Lord in his own right, has always been a trailblazer in the realm of journalism and charity. While Bird has previously published an autobiography, his foray into fiction marks a new chapter in his illustrious career. His belief in learning from history and his unique perspective on life shine through in his novel, reflecting the depth of his experiences and insights.

In a statement, Bird expressed his hopes that his novel would be a “disastrous book of a disastrous life,” hinting at the unconventional narrative that awaits readers. Through a collaboration of creativity and vision, Bird and Genesius Pictures are set to offer audiences a glimpse into a world where history and fantasy intersect, creating a tapestry of imagination and reflection.
