The Success of Twisters Reboot: A Box Office Hit

The reboot of the 1996 Amblin feature film, Twisters, has proven to be a promising success at the box office. With an impressive $7 million in preview earnings from fan Imax/PLF showings on Wednesday night and early previews on Thursday, the film is off to a strong start. Initial reviews and audience responses for the film, starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, have been overwhelmingly positive. Twisters boasts a 78% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a significant improvement over the original movie’s scores of 67% among critics and 58% among audiences.

Initial forecasts suggested a $50 million plus opening for Twisters, but with the film performing well in the heartland, expectations are now pointing towards a possible $60 million debut. The $7 million preview total from Wednesday and Thursday has set a promising precedent for the film’s weekend earnings. This figure even surpasses the $6.6 million in combined preview sales posted by 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes back in May.

The marketing strategy for Twisters seems to have hit the mark, with a significant presence across various social media platforms. RelishMix reported a social media reach of 341 million across platforms like TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. This places Twisters 3% above other action-adventure film comparables. The stars of the film, including Anthony Ramos, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Glen Powell, have a combined following of over 6.2 million on social media, indicating a strong online fan base.

While Warner Bros. is handling the domestic release of Twisters, Universal Pictures is in charge of the film’s international distribution. The Lee Isaac Chung-directed film has already grossed close to $13 million from 38 overseas markets. With an additional 38 markets set to open, including major territories like France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and China, the film’s international earnings are expected to exceed $45 million.

Twisters’ success at the box office positions it among the top openings for environmental disaster movies in the domestic market. Films like Roland Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, which debuted to $68.7 million and $65.2 million respectively, have set the bar high for the genre. Twisters’ strong performance in previews and positive critical reception indicate that it has the potential to join the ranks of these successful disaster films.

Twisters’ reboot has proven to be a box office hit, with strong initial earnings, positive reviews, and a promising international release ahead. The film’s success underscores the enduring appeal of disaster movies and the importance of engaging marketing strategies in today’s competitive film landscape.
