Netflix Expands Studio in New Mexico

Netflix co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, recently announced a major expansion of Netflix Studios Albuquerque, highlighting the significant investment the company has made in New Mexico’s production industry. Since 2019, the facility has seen nearly $900 million in total investment, solidifying Netflix’s commitment to nurturing and growing the thriving production ecosystem in the state.

The expansion project includes the addition of four new soundstages, three mills, one production office, two stage support buildings, and two dedicated backlot areas across 108 acres. These enhancements aim to enhance Netflix’s creative output and produce even more compelling films and series for its global audience. The larger facility is set to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and lower operating costs by incorporating sustainability features such as on-site solar and battery storage systems, geothermal heating and cooling, all-electric appliances, and 50 electric vehicle fast chargers.

Netflix’s decision to establish a production hub in New Mexico has proven to be a successful move. The state offers a diverse range of landscapes, a talented workforce, and a supportive community, making it an ideal location for filming. Notable projects filmed at the Albuquerque Studios include popular series like Stranger Things, The Harder They Fall, Army of the Dead, and El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.

Netflix has made a significant direct investment of nearly $575 million in New Mexico productions, with the total investment nearing $900 million when considering other productions that have utilized Netflix Studios Albuquerque. The company has also contributed to the local economy by hiring over 4,000 cast and crew members in the state from 2021 to 2023.

In an effort to engage with fans and the local community, Netflix launched the “Netflix in Your Neighborhood” website in 2022. The platform encourages fans to explore filming locations of Netflix projects in various parts of New Mexico, showcasing over 100 filming locations and cultural sites across eight titles. This initiative aims to bring the excitement of Netflix’s films and series beyond the screen and into the community, contributing culturally to the state.

Ted Sarandos expressed gratitude towards key stakeholders and partners who have supported Netflix’s expansion in New Mexico. He thanked New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Senator Ben Ray Luján, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, and various vendor partners for their collaboration. Additionally, Sarandos acknowledged the 2,800 construction workers who played a vital role in the successful completion of the expansion project.
